Caring for Your Writing Instruments

Owning a fine writing instrument is a pleasure, and like any cherished possession, it demands routine care to keep performing at its best. Flush your fountain pen every few weeks with clean, lukewarm water to remove dried ink and sediment that can clog the feed. Gently disassemble as far as the manual allows, and avoid using hot water, which can distort plastic or ebonite components.

After flushing, dry the nib and feed with a lint-free cloth and allow all parts to air-dry completely before reassembling. If you are switching to a different type of ink, always perform this deep cleaning to avoid chemical reactions that can form insoluble particles. For pigment-based inks, consider a specialized pen cleaner, but use it sparingly and follow the instructions to the letter.

When not in use, store your pens horizontally in a pen case or a dedicated tray to keep the nib evenly saturated. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can fade the colour of resin and the lacquer on metal pens, so keep them away from direct windows. A cool, dry space with relative humidity below 60% is ideal. If you reside in a very dry climate, a pen with a tight cap is preferable to reduce evaporation and the risk of hard starts.

Finally, invest in a soft polishing cloth to keep metal surfaces free from fingerprints and tarnish. Do not apply abrasive cleaners; a gentle wipe after each use is enough. Over time, the nib will naturally wear and develop its own unique smoothness. By following these simple steps, your writing instruments will not only retain their value but also provide decades of unbroken pleasure, always ready to capture your next great thought.
